You know what we’ve always been saying Broadway needs more of? Octogenarians doing the Running Man. Lucky for us, the new musical Gotta Dance will premiere in Chicago this year and has its eyes on Broadway for spring 2016. The tuner, based on the 2008 documentary of the same name, features music by Marvin Hamlisch and Matthew Sklar (who completed the score after Hamlisch's death in 2012), lyrics by Nell Benjamin and a book by Chad Beguelin and Bob Martin. Tony winner Jerry Mitchell will direct and choreograph the show.
Performances will begin at the Windy City’s Bank of America Theatre on December 13 and run through January 17, 2016. Additional information, including a cast and design team, will be announced at a later date.
Gotta Dance tells the true story of a group of professional dancers, who, in 2007, were tasked with getting a basketball team’s senior citizen dance troupe performance-ready for their center court hip-hop debut. Through an unlikely art form and some hot moves, generation gaps are crossed and friendships are formed.
The show is not to be confused with the Broadway.com series Gotta Dance!.
